  • 3 Ways to Shake It Up!

To heck with New Year's resolutions: they seldom last. Instead, take to heart three things about today's job search that will propel your search forward:

    1. It's not your dad's/mom's job search any more. In fact, if you looked for a job even two years ago, it's not even THAT job search any more. Evidence: Only about 20-40% of good, open jobs are advertised or posted. Why? Because companies know they can find great talent through their own employees, through people networking their way "in", and through using social media on the Web (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter). So, to shake things up in your favor, adjust your search to match.

    2. Today, it's about the employer's pain, not what YOU want. Meaning, recitation of your work history will not impress. Instead, shake it up by using that history to ferret out their problem(s), and by telling them how you'd fix them, will get their attention.

    3. Know that to speak well of yourself these days is NOT "bragging". You may normally be someone who doesn't call attention to your successes and jobs well done. But during your job search, you must tell the interviewer those very things. To do so means you will be helping her do her job: she will be able to go back to her people and say "FINALLY, I've found someone who has SHOWN me they CAN do this job!" So be ready to shake up your old approach to instead tell your success stories. And tell them while you're networking, too: you never know if the person you're talking to is your next manager!

It's a new year: Are you tired of waiting for "something" to happen in your career? Are you ready to take action and land in 2010? Do you want to laugh at the recession? Then consider a Quick Consult with the Queen. Job search and resume queen, that is!

Here's what one Marketing Manager said about his Quick Consult: "I definitely felt like the session gave a fresh direction to my job search and have already begun to implement a number of your ideas into my strategy."

Why let more time go by with no salary or a too-low salary? Find out what's right AND what's wrong during a Quick Consult with the Queen. This 1 1/2 to 2-hour session gives you concrete steps to follow for getting unstuck. It also gives you practical insights into what YOU bring a new employer, knowledge about what sets you apart from the crowd of other candidates. The fee is $175 and the results are priceless!

And if you choose to work with one of us on these steps, that fee is applicable to your search project.

Joanne Meehl and Career Consultant Kelly Oslund do Quick Consults in person or over the phone/Skype. Call or email us today to schedule your session.

    Thought of the Day:

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Ever since a colleague called Joanne Meehl "The Resume Queen" years ago, and she then trademarked the title, Joanne has worked to live up to the name by constantly keeping her resumes in tune with what employers will read. Since then, she added "The Job Search Queen" (now also trademarked), and uses this title more often, because it better reflects the breadth of her services.
