A few weeks ago, I met with a job hunter I’ll call Nicole who was saying "Everyone's been nice about my networking with them but I'm not sure it's working".
I asked, “What makes you say that?"
“I’m not getting names from them, of other people to network with.”
“OK…let’s look at your last week or two of networking…when you showed them your target company list, what did they say?”
Silence.
Aha. I asked, “Are you giving them company names so they can think about people they know at those companies?”
“Well, not really, I just say that I’m looking at medium-sized companies that are hiring.”
I answered, “Well, ‘medium’ can mean 500 employees
or 2,000 …what else, specifically, about such companies appeals to you other than their size…can you give examples of such companies?”
Nicole blanked.
We did a little more around this, with me asking what her priorities are for her next company, successes she wanted to repeat, and how she can tie those successes to her targets.
Nicole got it, mentioned a few companies by name, and verbalized a plan going forward.
Here’s what she’ll do, and what I recommend to those of you in job search:
1. Have that list of companies that you’ve vetted over and over again, narrowing the list down.
2. Share that list with your contacts, including family and friends. Tie yourself to what those companies need: tell your contacts how you can solve those companies’ likely problems, based on successes you’ve had before. Be sure to keep the conversation future-oriented and about what you share in your field. In other words, "shop talk".
3. Tell them about your successes! It’s not bragging, it’s informing, it's PROOF you can do the job.
4. Ask “Who do you know at these companies?”
FIFTH and last, follow up with a thank you that includes at least some of your latest target company list. Doing these 5 things will advance your search especially in this uneven and at times volatile economy where there are some bright spots but many delays in hiring. You can do this!
