Help for when you’re between two career certainties

October 2025

In most of the country, days are noticeably shorter, leaves are on the ground, Halloween decor is in the stores, and you've unearthed your sweaters and jackets.

Football and soccer and other sports are in full swing and if you haven't already visited that pumpkin patch and had some hot cider or pumpkin spice anything, you will soon!

Companies are doing their fall hiring (yes, some companies ARE hiring), hoping to get everyone on the team "before the holidays" so that they can charge ahead full speed in early January.

How to be one of these hires? See the lead article below where I tell you how - How to be among your target company's fall hires. Yes, job search is tougher right now but YOU can do the smart things to get noticed and be their new hire.

your target company's fall hires

A few weeks ago, I met with a job hunter I’ll call Nicole who was saying "Everyone's been nice about my networking with them but I'm not sure it's working".

I asked, “What makes you say that?"

“I’m not getting names from them, of other people to network with.”

“OK…let’s look at your last week or two of networking…when you showed them your target company list, what did they say?”

Silence.

Aha. I asked, “Are you giving them company names so they can think about people they know at those companies?”

“Well, not really, I just say that I’m looking at medium-sized companies that are hiring.”

I answered, “Well, ‘medium’ can mean 500 employees

or 2,000 …what else, specifically, about such companies appeals to you other than their size…can you give examples of such companies?”

Nicole blanked.

We did a little more around this, with me asking what her priorities are for her next company, successes she wanted to repeat, and how she can tie those successes to her targets.

Nicole got it, mentioned a few companies by name, and verbalized a plan going forward.

Here’s what she’ll do, and what I recommend to those of you in job search:

1. Have that list of companies that you’ve vetted over and over again, narrowing the list down.

2.  Share that list with your contacts, including family and friends. Tie yourself to what those companies need: tell your contacts how you can solve those companies’ likely problems, based on successes you’ve had before. Be sure to keep the conversation future-oriented and about what you share in your field. In other words, "shop talk".

3. Tell them about your successes! It’s not bragging, it’s informing, it's PROOF you can do the job.

4. Ask Who do you know at these companies?”

FIFTH and last, follow up with a thank you that includes at least some of your latest target company list.

Doing these 5 things will advance your search especially in this uneven and at times volatile economy where there are some bright spots but many delays in hiring. You can do this!

Tips from Joanne:

First: Start with YOU

What are your values, interests, personality, skills TODAY? What kind of place would advance you, or hold you back? What is a “deal killer”? What makes them walk on water? What is their preferred managerial style? What are your criteria for the industry, size of company, company stage of life, location/ commute, culture?

Then research companies
Read company sites, company reviews, analyst reviews, alumni comments on LinkedIn, company and current worker comments on LinkedIn, alumni comments on social media, the issues on the minds of leaders there. Use AI tools to help you discover this info.

Narrow your list from many to less than 50, then cull it down further as you learn more and add other names and repeat the process.

How to do this: Ask people who work there (or used to work there), through LinkedIn and networking, what it’s really like there – what is rewarded, how does the company develop you and continue to help you grow, how does the company show that its people are valued? Now tie all this back to you: Who still matches who YOU are now?

Thought of the Month

We all go to dark places in this life. Something happens – it can be financial, physical, the death of a loved one – and it puts us in a dark place.
And the answer to that is always the same: It’s what you do next that counts.
