If you’re in job search, you’re probably hearing “posting online will help you” especially on LinkedIn.
To post just for posting sake won’t impress anyone. But sharing expertise? That not only helps others, it helps LinkedIn SEE your expertise, and with repeated use, will cause LinkedIn (and others who know of you) to send viewers in your field to your profile more. Which you want!
Research shows that the constant 1-2 posts a week, over time, to be more effective than a blast of material in one week every few months.
Here are 3 practical ways to trick yourself into posting more on LinkedIn especially during a job search, without getting stuck in fear of publishing: posting gets easier when you make it small, routine, and low-stakes.
1) Make it a weekly habit
Don’t add pressure by aiming to write “an amazing post.” Aim to communicate one idea that works, one lesson learned, or a company review in under 5 minutes. Small steps help you build momentum and confidence, and they don’t add pressure.
2) Use a “first draft only” rule
Tell yourself the post is not a final product; it’s just a draft you’re allowed to publish. The fear usually comes from over-editing and overthinking, so lowering the standard makes hitting “post” feel safer. And you’ll feel less reluctant to click that “publish” button!
3) Reframe posting as a secret shared, not a make-or-break performance
Don’t get caught up in, “Will people like this, and think it’s worthwhile?” Instead, ask, “Does this help others, and does it show I’m involved with the work of my career?” Various resources today often recommend staying engaged and consistent to earn the recognition of a reputation of success in your field.
Clicking the “publish” button for me, the first time on LinkedIn, almost made me freak out. Who would read this?!, I scoffed. But know that your ideas and wisdoms DO help others. And it engages them to comment and, frankly, follow you and connect with you. When I got supportive feedback, I was hooked!
You being in that "shop talk" conversation is what the algorithm looks for. Is this caving in to the technology? Maybe but instead, I think it’s just being realistic, important in today’s work world.
Your posts don’t have to be about something earthshaking, just aim to share one idea that works, one lesson learned, or a review of a company’s new product in under 5-10 minutes. Read it again, asking yourself “Will this give others some guidance, some perspective?” If the answer is yes, click “publish”! You'll be glad you did.
Thanks to Perplexity.AI Pro for help in finding these tips. BTW, I believe you can still get Perplexity.AI Pro for free for a year (a $200 savings) through PayPal. I get nothing for mentioning that, but it was mentioned to me a few months ago and I’m grateful for the tip, so I’m just passing that on. - Joanne
A new service I offer is to help senior executives do the writing they need to be visible. Maybe that's you and you need to post so you can be more visible for that fractional role or Board Director position you now want. Or just have a ton of knowledge to share, so that it helps others. Be in touch with me for the details - and start publishing!
